McKenzie Tuckson is a 21-year-old who embodies the spirit of resilience and achievement. Despite living with Rett Syndrome, McKenzie has not only thrived but has also become a trailblazer of inspiration for peers and community. As a fashion-forward and intelligent personality, McKenzie is a varsity cheerleader and has significantly contributed to her school and community. She is the first nonverbal Ambassador for Metro Nashville Public Schools and has served as the President of her junior and senior class at Whites Creek High School. McKenzie's leadership and advocacy have earned her the prestigious 2019 Westley-Rice Student Advocate of the Year award for the state of Tennessee and the 2022 Westley Morgan Tennessee Titans Community Hero recognition.
McKenzie's journey is a testament to her determination and the support she has received. She enjoys attending classes, public speaking, and praising God, showcasing her multifaceted personality and talents. Additionally, McKenzie has been employed at Bubble Love Tea at the Farmers Market in Downtown Nashville for the past two years, demonstrating her independence and work ethic.
Rett Syndrome does not define McKenzie; instead, she defines Rett Syndrome through her actions, achievements, and unwavering spirit. Her story is inspiring, showing that individuals can overcome challenges and make a meaningful impact in their communities with determination and support. TAMARA TUCKSON
A Beacon of Advocacy for Individuals with Disabilities
Tamara Tuckson’s journey as an advocate for individuals with disabilities began with her daughter McKenzie’s diagnosis of Rett syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Determined to provide the best care for her daughter, Tamara’s passion for advocacy was ignited, leading her to found Mission2Advocate in 2015. Through this organization, she offers IEP consultation and support to families navigating the complexities of education systems, ensuring children with disabilities receive the education and resources they deserve.
As Tamara worked to support McKenzie, she realized that many families shared similar struggles. This fueled her determination to make a broader impact by participating in research studies and advocating for better access to therapies and treatments. Tamara’s tireless efforts to raise awareness and break down stigmas surrounding disability led to her receiving the Wayne Parker Advocate of the Year award in 2022, a testament to her unwavering dedication to the cause.
Tamara’s love for McKenzie and her vision for a more inclusive world continues to drive her mission. Through Mission2Advocate, she supports families, raises awareness, and advocates for policies that improve the lives of individuals with disabilities. Her story is one of hope, resilience, and a reminder of the power of advocacy in creating a world where everyone, regardless of ability, has the chance to thrive.
